Cette affiche fut réalisée pour la World Federation of United Nations Associations – WFUNA (Fédération Mondiale des Associations pour les Nations Unies) à l’occasion du 24 octobre 2020 soit la 75e Journée des Nations Unies à Genève. Grégoire MATHIAS, artiste contemporain à qui l’affiche fut commandée, formé aux Beaux-Arts de Paris, expose en Europe et aux États-Unis. Dans la lignée de Picasso, Miro ou Chagall, qui ont réalisé affiches et lithographies pour la WFUNA, il renouvelle le genre avec une colombe de la paix composée par l’accumulation de drapeaux des États-membres. L’association de drapeaux portant ainsi un message de force dans l’unité, est un classique utilisé de manière récurrente depuis la Seconde Guerre Mondiale par les Nations Unies tout comme le Conseil de l’Europe, l’Union Européenne ou les promoteurs du Plan Marshall. Nombre de ces affiches sont considérées aujourd’hui comme historiques tout en étant intemporelles, visuellement comme symboliquement. On peut citer “United”Leslie Ragan (1943), et “Together” I. Spreekmeester (1950).
L’affiche de la Journée des Nations Unies 2020 s’inscrit dans cette lignée et porte le message que 75 ans après leur création, les Nations Unies comptent 193 États-membres. Dont la force vient de la cohésion autour de la paix commune. A l’image des drapeaux entremêlés positionnés au hasard, formant un symbole : la colombe de la paix. Elle évolue sur un fond noir évoquant un environnement parfois hostile, et donc que la paix reste fragile.
Un exemplaire de ce modèle est exposé au Secrétariat Général de la WFUNA à Genève.

This poster was made for the World Federation of United Nations Associations – WFUNA for the 24th of October 2020 (UN Day) : the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations Organization (established in 1945).
Grégoire Mathias, the contemporary artist graduated from the Beaux-Arts of Paris. His artworks are exhibited in Europe and United States. In line with Picasso, Miro or Chagall, who all created posters or lithographies for WFUNA, Mathias offers us his approach with the Dove of Peace being formed by a superposition of flags of Member States of the United Nations. The theme of flags formations aiming to convey a message of force in unity is considered as a classic and has been used with great success since the Second World War by the United Nations as well as by the promoters of the Marshal Plan, by the Council of Europe or by the European Union. A number of these posters are nowadays broadly considered as iconic and can be seen in history books while they retain a timeless aspect both graphically and as far as the message they convey is concerned. Examples are “United” by Leslie Ragan, 1943, and “Together” by I. Spreekmeester, 1950.
The poster created for the 2020 United Nations Day follows the above mentionned tradition while conveying a message just as strong. 75 years after their establishment, the United Nations Organization has 193 members, more than ever before, but can still only draw its force from the cohesion of its membership around a common objective of shared peace (i.e. intertwined flags, randomly and imperfectly positioned, together forming a single image of a dove). Nonetheless, multilateralism and international cooperation are under threat and more and more questioned as established principles by the blind defense of national interests around the world hence the beautiful project born 75 years ago remains extremely fragile and needs broad support as it evolves in a sometimes hostile environment.
